Google
This is a digital copy of a book that was preserved for generations on library shelves before it was carefully scanned by Google as part of a project
to make the world's books discoverable online.
It has survived long enough for the copyright to expire and the book to enter the public domain. A public domain book is one that was never subject
to copyright or whose legal copyright term has expired. Whether a book is in the public domain may vary country to country. Public domain books
are our gateways to the past, representing a wealth of history, culture and knowledge that's often difficult to discover.
Marks, notations and other maiginalia present in the original volume will appear in this file - a reminder of this book's long journey from the
publisher to a library and finally to you.
Usage guidelines
Google is proud to partner with libraries to digitize public domain materials and make them widely accessible. Public domain books belong to the
public and we are merely their custodians. Nevertheless, this work is expensive, so in order to keep providing tliis resource, we liave taken steps to
prevent abuse by commercial parties, including placing technical restrictions on automated querying.
We also ask that you:
+ Make non-commercial use of the files We designed Google Book Search for use by individuals, and we request that you use these files for
personal, non-commercial purposes.
+ Refrain fivm automated querying Do not send automated queries of any sort to Google's system: If you are conducting research on machine
translation, optical character recognition or other areas where access to a large amount of text is helpful, please contact us. We encourage the
use of public domain materials for these purposes and may be able to help.
+ Maintain attributionTht GoogXt "watermark" you see on each file is essential for in forming people about this project and helping them find
additional materials through Google Book Search. Please do not remove it.
+ Keep it legal Whatever your use, remember that you are responsible for ensuring that what you are doing is legal. Do not assume that just
because we believe a book is in the public domain for users in the United States, that the work is also in the public domain for users in other
countries. Whether a book is still in copyright varies from country to country, and we can't offer guidance on whether any specific use of
any specific book is allowed. Please do not assume that a book's appearance in Google Book Search means it can be used in any manner
anywhere in the world. Copyright infringement liabili^ can be quite severe.
About Google Book Search

PREFACE.
The new edition of the Hom(eopathio Medical Direc-
tory now presented to the Profession, requires few
prefatory remarks ; the contents of the volume speak for
themselves. The demand for a new edition proves that
the work has been found useful.
The Names and Qualifications have been copied exactly
from the returns received ; so that each individual is
responsible for the correctness of the Medical and Literary
Distinctions he assumes. The Editor requested each
person to give the name of the University, College, or
Licensing body from which, and the date at which, the
Title claimed was obtained. Those who have not com-
plied with this request, have been repeatedly applied to
in vain, to obtain the desired information.
The returns from America have arrived too late to be
added to this edition. This is the less to be regretted, as
Dr. Jackson, of Roxburgh, Massachusets, is engaged in
preparing a complete American Homoeopathic Directory.
IV. PEEFACE.
The Continental List has been much curtailed ; the
places chiefly visited by English Tourists have alone been
given, and a few medical men named in each place.
Lastly, the Editor begs to offer his best thanks to his
correspondents for the kind assistance they have afforded
him.
All communications, respecting this or future editions
of the work, to be addressed either to the Editor, or to •
Mr. Turner, 41, Piccadilly, Manchester.
56, Prospect Street, Hull,
36th December, 1854.

HAHNEMANN HOSPITAL,
39, Bloomsbuby Squabe.
Instituted on the 16th October, 1850.
This Hospital was closed on the 27th of May last; j
that its closure is not to he attributed to the want of
patients, will be obvious from the following figures, com-
prising the total number of patients treated during the
three years and a half of its existence.
In- Patients 752
Cured 430
Died 30
Out- Patients 12,000
Cured 400(i
Died 40
The numbers were increasing at the date of its closure,
but the enormous expense, upwards of £2,400 annually,
attending the treatment of such a large number of sick
persons, falling as it did entirely on the resources of
private charity, was found to be more than the Governors
could meet; and, therefore, rather than the Hospital should
be inefficient, or become involved in debt, they chose in
the meantime to shut it up entirely.

ASSOCIATION FOR THE PROTECTION OF
HOMOEOPATHIC PRACTITIONERS & STUDENTS.
This Association was founded at a Congress of Homoeo-
pathic Practitioners, held in London, on the 23rd and
24th July, Q851. Its object was to protect the interests
of Homoeopathists against attacks from whatever quarter
they might proceed. The special case that led to its in-
stitution, was the unjust rejection of Mr. Pope by the
Medical Faculty of the University of Edinburgh. The ob-
jects accomplished by the Association are principally
these. It has secured a qualification for the rejected
candidates. It has got up and presented a petition to the
Patrons of the University of Edinburgh, numerously and
influentially signed, representing the injustice of Mr.
Pope's rejection on account of his Homoeopathic belief.
It has published a volume entitled "Homceopathy in
1851," edited by Dr. Russell.
As nothing has recently occurred to call for the inter-
ference of the Association, it remains in abeyance ; retain-
ing, however, its original institution and committee,
ready to act should any occasion arise for its services.
The Committee is composed of the following gentle-
men : — ^Dr. Black, Mr. Blake, Dr. Chapman, Dr. Drys-
dale, Dr. Dudgeon (Hon. Secretary), Dr. Fearon,
Dr. E. Hamilton, Mr. Hering, Dr. Ker, Dr. Laurie, Mr.
Leadam, Dr. Macdonald, Dr. Madden, Dr. Norton, Dr.
Ozanne, Dr. Russell, Mr. Wilson.
73 THE HOMCBOPATHIC
THE BRITISH INSTITUTE OF HOMOEOPATHY.
Established, December, 1853.
Chairman — Charles Luther, Esq., M.D.
Treasurer — ^David Wilson, Esq., M.R.C.S.
Secretary — ^William V. Drury, Esq., M.D., 3, Crescent,
Camden Eoad, Begent's Park, London.
OBJECTS OF THE INSTITUTE.
1. To protect the public, by the most strenuous efforts,
against unqualified and incompetent practitioners, and
to secure to the public the services of men of sound
information.
2. To uphold and disseminate in their purity, the clear,
strict and unrefuted principles and rules, of the Organon
of Hahnemann ; to iiie utter exclusion of loose unscien-
tific practice.
3. To protect the external interests of homoeopathy, against
all direct or indirect aggression.
In reference to the attainment of the proposed objects
of the Institute by literary means, the following seem to
be the best calculated to ensure success : —
1. One or two tracts written as simply and intelligibly as
possible, to infuse correct notions on the principles of
homoeopathy, and at the same to point out the errors
of allopathy.
2. Instructions for students in the correct study and prac-
tice of homoeopathy
3. Instructions for the non-professional public on emer-
gencies.
4. A weekly Journal, whenever the Institute shall deem
the publication of such to be called for, the objects of
which shall be to explain the true principles of homoeo-
pathy; to impart that amount of information on its
practice which can be safely and usefully resorted to on
emergencies ; the inculcation of simple and sound prin-
ciples on hygiene and the physical and general education
MEDICAL BIBECTOBT. 73
of children ; and the narration of current events relating
to the subjects mentioned.
5. A semi-monthly or monthly joimial, of an exclusively
professional character. In this latter publication the
views and principles of the Institute will be upheld ;
the British homoeopathic practitioner will be made
acqainted with everything worth knowing which appears
in the periodical and general homceopathic literature of
Germany, France, Italy, Spain, America, and other
countries ; and not less with iJie great treasures of
homoeopathic literature in its best days, especially those
of the twenty-three volumes of Stapf's Archiv, and other
valuable German and French publications. This journal
will have distinguished correspondents in different
countries, who are to be honorary members of the Insti-
tute. It ought also to take especial care of British
homceopathic literature, by a fair and impartial, but
most rigorous criticism, not only of new publications,
but also of what has hitherto been offered to the student
for instruction and guidance.

HOMOEOPATHY IN AMERICA.
1866.
The editor has been unable to procure a complete list of the
HomcBopathic Practitioners in the United States; Dr. Jackson, of •
Boxburgh, Massachnsets, is preparing an American Homceopathic
Medical Directory. In the absence of more detailed information, it
may be interesting to state that in the United States there are upwards ^
of ibree thousand duly qualified Homoeopathic medical men engaged in 'Z^ c/^
practice. There are two legally established Homoeopathic Medical '^
Colleges, annually sending forth a band of well educated graduates ;
a third College for the State of New York is about to be opened.
There are three Public Hospitals, and a veiy large number of Dispen-
saries ; thirty Homoeopathic Associations and Societies^ and seven
quarterly and monthly Homoeopathic Journals.

HOMCEOPATHIC HOSPITALS.
GUMPENDORF HOMCEOPATHIC HOSPITAL, YIENNA.
Physicians — ^Dr. Flieschmann, Dr. Wrumb.
Assistant Physician — Dr. Caspar.
This Institution was formerly called the ** Hospital of the Sisters
of Charity," and is well known, both in Britain and on the Comanent,
as an object of interest, as weU as of abuse. The Hospital was opened
in 1832, for the reception of Cholera patients ; from which period till
January, 1835, a half Homoeopathic half Allopathic system of treat-
ment was pursued. In 1835, Dr. Flieschman was appointed Hospital
Physician ; and having resolved fairly to try the strength of Homceo-
pa&y, he got rid of aU Allopathic drags, and treated every cftia of
disease that presented itself solely Homoeopathioally. The success of
Dr. EUeschmanu's experiments are well known.
The Hospital of the Sisters of Charity at Yienna has been largely
frequented by Medical men ftom a]l pmrts of Europe, who are anxious
to see Homoeopathic practice ; and certainly, Homoaopathy is much

indebted for its present position in the world to the ability and zeaj of
the physicians, and to the care and kindness of the nurses of this
Hospital. Thiongh the interest of Br. flieschman, and on account of
the success attending the Homoeopathic treatment of disease in this
Hospital, thep^mperor of Austria was induced to rescind the statute
wh.ch forbade the practice of Homoeopathy in the Austrian dominions,
and also to establish an Institution in Vienna for the teaching of
Homoeopathy, under the protection of the GoTemment, and with Dr.
Wrumb at its head as Principal.
HOMCEOPATHIO HOSPITAL, LEOPOLD FAU30UEG,
VIENNA.
This Hospital contains twenty-four beds, is attended by an effldent
staff of Physicians, and sick nurses by the Sisters of Charity.
HOMOEOPATHIC HOSPITAL, LINZ, UPPER AUSTRIA.
Physician — Dr. Reiss.
House Surgeon — Dr. Pleninger.
As the Goyemment of Austria requires a correct monthly return
of the nnmber of patients admitted to any Hospital within its juns-
diction, together with the nature of the disease laboured under, and
the results of treatment, the utmost reliance may be placed on the
published medical statistics of that country ; and, iJberefore, the charge
''manufacturing'' which is frequently brought against Homoeopathic
statistics is altogether groundless, so far as Austria is concerned.
The Hospital at Linz was opened for the reception of diseased per-
sons on Uie Ist of June, 1843. It contains thirty beds ; the patients
are nursed by the Sisters of Charity, to which order the building be-
longs; and in point of cleanliness and comfort, it is in no way inferior
to me most fayoured hospital in Britain.
KREMSIER HOMCEOPATHIO HOSPITAL.
Physician — Dr. Schweitzer.
This Hospital was opened on the 12th October, 1845.
HOMCEOPATHIC HOSPITAL, NECHANITZ.
Physician — ^Dr. Eeltl.
This Hospital was founded in 1846, by the Countess Theresa Von
Harrach. The mortality in this Hospital during the years 1846-7-8
was 2-48 per cent., and the cost of each patient in the Institution was,
on an average, 6 florins, 15 krewners, (Ids.)

HOMCEOPATHIO HOSPITAL, TURIN.
This Hospital was founded by the effbrts of the Canon of the
Cathedral, Ahb^ Cottolsengo, where all the patients are treated Homoeo-
pathically under the immediate superintendence of Dr. Demichelis.
L'HOSPICE DE LA PROVIDENCE, NICE.
This in an Institation of great interest, being solely devoted to
the restoration and protection of neglected and diseased Oiphan
Children. From 1815 to 1835, the Hospital was under Allopathic
treatment, from 1835 it has been under HomcBopathic ; the mortality
under the former system was very great ; under the latter the health
of the children has been better maintained, and the number of deaths
greatly reduced.
HOM(EOPATHY IN THE GENERAL HOSPITAL,
AT MADRID.
For a number of years HomoBopathy has been practised in this
Hospital with so much success, that the Queen has, by royal mandate,
sanctioned the establishment of the Chairs for the teaching of Homodo-
pathy : one for Clinical, the other for Theoretical Lectures. Drs. Rio
and Nunez, Professors.
HOMCEOPATHIO HOSPITAL, MOSCOW.

This Hospital was oi>ened for the Homoeopathic treatment of
disease, in presence of the Governor-General, Prince Setscherbatoff,
and other persons of rank, on the 16th of December, 1845. It is sup-
ported by voluntary contributions. No report of the success of the
undertaking has yet reached us.

MISEOLTZ HOMCEOPATHIC HOSPITAL.
Physician — Dr. Stem.
The local authorities of Miskoltz, aware of the benefits of Ho-
mcBopathy, granted Dr. Stem permission (in 1846^ to open an Hos-
pital, and voted a yearly donation to assist in supporting it, but the
Boyal Government shortly after over-ruled the resolution of the local
power, and caused the Hospital to be closed ; not, however, before
certain good results were obtained — out of one hundred and twenty-
one patients treated, ninety-six were cured, twenty-two much improved,
and three were dismissed uncured, and no deaths.
HOMCEOPATHIC HOSPITAL, ST. PETERSBURG.
Physician — Dr. Stender.
The Minister of the Interior (in 1848) placed one-half of a female
Hospital under the care of Dr. Stender, HomcBopathic Physician, in
order that, side by side with Allopathy, the merits of HomcBopathy
might be made to appear. The experiment continues to demonstrate
the utility of the last named system.

BRITISH OBITUARY.
DR. CURIE.
Paul Francis Curie was bom in Grand Oharmont,
France, in 1799; studied luider the Professors of the
Faculty of Medicine, at Paris ; served as Supernumerary
and Assistant Surgeon in the Army; and graduated as
M.D. at Paris, in 1824. In 1832 he became a convert to Ho-
moBopathy; in 1838, he settled in Paris; and, in conjunc-
tion with Dr. Simon, performed a series of Homoeopathic
Experiments in one of the large hospitals of that capital.
In 1885, Dr. Curie was induced, at the earnest solicitation
of an eminent merchant, to exchange Paris for London,
in 1887, the first British Homoeopathic Dispensary was
opened, at Finsbury Circus; at this dispensary Dr. Curie
was daily to be foimd, and from him several of the mem-
bers of the British Homoeopathic medical profession, re-
ceived the rudiments of their Homoeopathic knowledge.
In 1 845, the English Homceopathic Association was formed,
Dr. Curie being one of its principal medical supporters; in
the same year Dr. Curie graduated at Eing*s College, Aber-
deen; in the same year the well known inquest on the
death of Mr. Cordwell occurred, the circumstances of
which were published in a pamphlet by Dr. Curie, where
he so warmly defended his peculiar dietetic notions, as al-
most to identify them with Homoeopathy; the views set
forth in this pamphlet were emphatically dissented from
by a large number of the most influential Homoeopaths.
In 1 850, the late Hahnemann Hospital was opened, and
Dr. Curie was elected one of the Physicians, and Clinical
Lecturer. It was from one of his patients in this hospital,
108 THE HOM(£OPATHIC
that he caught the disease of which he died, on the 5th
October, 1853, aged 54.
Years must pass, and another generation of Practitioners
rise, before an impartial history of the influence of Dr.
Curie's career on the progress of Homoeopathy can be
written. Dr. Curie laboured long, hard, and well, in the
cause of Homoeopathy ; and amongst the list of its early
promulgators in England, the name of Curie will not be
forgotten.
DR. SPILLAN
Was a Fellow of the College of Physicians, Dublin, and
was better known as an author and editor, than as a suc-
cessful practitioner. He was author of "Libamenta
Praxeos Medicse;" of a "Homoeopathic Pharmacopoeia,''
and of a Manual of Therapeutics ; he was also translator
of "Andral's Clinical Medicine," and many other useful
and important works. Dr. Spillan died at London, on
the 2nd July, 1854.
H. S. SEARLE, Esq.,
Became a Member of the College of Surgeons, London,
in 1818, and Honorary Fellow of the same College, in
1844. Mr. Searle was Surgeon to the London Homoeo-
pathic Hospital, and was author of a number of Essays
on the "Absorbents" — "Affections of the Stomach and
Brain" — "Atmospheric Pressure," &c., &c.

Practiced originally at Leipzig, but was driven thence
by certain paltry acts of persecution, on the part of his
Allopathic colleagues of that town ; in 1843, Dr. Wahle
settled in Rome, and after experiencing great difficulties
from the Pontifical authorities in obtaining permission to
practice, he ultimately obtained a large practice; he was
an excellent practitioner, a man of genial humour, and
much liked by his patients. Dr. Wahle enriched the
Materia Medica, by excellent provings of Kreosote, Pru-
nus Spinosa, and Cimex lectularius. He died at Rome, on
the 9th of April, 1853, aged 55.
DR. PESCHIER,
Was bom at Geneva, in 1782; graduated at Paris, in 1809.
In 1822, he published an Essay on the Treatment of
Pneumonia and Pleurisy, by large doses of Tartar Emetic
which gained him considerable reputation. In 1832, his
attention was directed to Homoeopathy, and he began its
study with diligence, visiting Hahnemann the same year.
In 1833, he commenced the publication of the **Bibliothe-
que Homoeopathique de Geneve," the first Homceopathic
110 TH£ HOM(EOPATHIC
periodical published in the French language. His attain-
ments in literature, philosophy, botany, astronomy,
mathematics, and theology, were considerable. He
spoke most of the languages of Europe ; and at the age
of sixty began the study of Hebrew, that he might be
able to study the Bible in the original. He died on the
31st May, 1853.
DR. F. HARTMANN,
Another of Hahnemann's own disciples, has been re-
moved by death. Soon the whole of his early converts
will have followed him from the distractions of this life,
to the rest and peace of another. Dr. Hartmann was
bom at Debtsch, in 1796. Early after finishing his
medical studies, he became convinced of the truth of
Homoeopathy, and enjoyed the advantage of Hahnemann's
personal instructions. For some time he had a good
practice in Leipzig ; but for the last eight years he was
confined to his room by a severe and painful disease,
though he still continued his literary labours, for the
support of his family. He died on the 10th October, 1853,
aged 57. Dr. Hartmann was one of the founders of the
'^Allgemeine Homoopathische Zeitung;'* and continued
one of its editors until his death. He was the author of
"Therapeutics of Acute and Chronic Diseases;'* ** Di-
seases of Children ;" many papers in his own journal, and
a work on Homoeopathic Dietetics. He translated *' Car-
pari's Dispensatoiy," into Latin.
DR. BAMBERG, BERLIN,
Bom at Meseritz. in the Grand Duchy of Posen, on the
d2nd February, 1801 ; graduated at the Universily of
Berlin, on the 20th December, 1826 ; and died on the
25th November, 1853, aged 52. At the period of his
death, Dr. Bambei^ was engaged with an elaborate '' His-
tory of Medicine, from the remotest times to the present
day."
MEDICAL DIRECTORY. Ill
DR. MELICHER, BERLIN,
For many years enjoyed a high reputation and large prac-
tice in Berlin. He suffered great pain during his illness ;
and frequently wished for death to relieve him from his
torture. He died on the 16th December, 1853 ; the im-
mediate cause was paralysis of the lungs.
DR. MARENZELLER, VIENNA,
This veteran Homoeopathist, by the influence of his
name, was the chief instrument of spreading Homoeo-
pathy in the Austrian dominions ; he was the friend and
contemporary of Hahnemann; and was employed, by
order of the Emperor, in performing a series of experi-
ments with Homoeopathy in the Military Hospital at
Vienna ; these experiments are but imperfectly known in
England, — a circumstance much to be regretted, as they
form a marked contrast to the so-called experiments of
Andral. Dr. Marenzeller lived long to enjoy his honours;
he died on the 6th January, 1854, aged 90.
DR. ROMANI, OF NAPLES,
Was bom at Vasto, in 1785. He studied medicine, and
took his degree, at Naples ; and rapidly acquired so great
a reputation, that the Queen appointed him her Physician-
in-Ordinary. During the invasion of the Neapolitan do-
minions by the Austrians, in 1821, Dr. Roman! was suf-
fering from a very painful disease; the fame of Dr.
Necker, who was attached to the Austrian army, attracted
his attention, and having put himself under his care, was
rapidly cured. This led him to study Homooopathy ; and
he practised with great success in Naples. He was in-
duced to visit England by the late Earl of Shrewsbury,
in 1827 ; and established a regular Homoeopathic Dispen-
sary, at Alton Towers. The climate of England did not
agree with him ; and after a short residence in this coun-
try, he returned to Naples. He published several original

Observations on the importanoe and value, as a Medical Agent, of
STRINGFELLOW'S
PATENT ELECTRO -GALVANIC
POCKET BATTEET.
It affords the easiest, most efficient, and complete method ever discovered
of applying, for curative purposes, a mild oontinaons stream of electricity.
This invention obviates all objections and difficnlties; it is portable, easy
in its application, and oertain in its action.
Galyajhsm., applied medically, should never produce much pain.
The current requires an abundance as to quantity, and to be sufficiently
intense so at to traverse the affected parts, and genUy stimnlate the action
of the nerves and muscles when contracted by any severe attack.
Eligtbioitt is also an important agent in stimulating the organs of
secretion; it qmckens the capiUary circulation of the skin, and induces
diaphoresis or perspiration — it is thowfore very applicable in severe attacks
from cold; and in diseases of the liver Galvanism acts as if by magic, in-
creasing its action, and causing it to convey pure and healthy bile, which
thus tends to facilitate digestion, and restore health.
In AiTEMA, Shobtmsm or Breath, and CoNSUXPTioir, this reme*
dial agent always affords relief, and frequently cures when every other
means have proved abortive; and in cases of Liflammation and aeute
Neuralgic Pams, it acts as a charm. It needs only a trial, and its value
will then, and then only, be duly appreciated, by means of

you In London, that you were interested commercially in Cod Liver OIL It waa fitting
that the auUior of the best analysis tatd investigations into the properties of this Ou
should himself be the purv^or of this important medicine.
" I feel, however, some difadence in venturing to ftilfil your request by giving you my
opinion of the quality of the Oil of which yon gave me a sample ; because I know that
no one can be better, and few so well acquainted with the physical and ohradcal pro-
pertiea of this medicine as yourself, whom I regard as the nighest authority on the
subject.
" I can, however, have no hesitation about the propriety of responding to your appli-
cation. The Oil which yon gave me was of the Teiy finest quality, whether con-
sidered with reference to its eolonr, flavour, or chemical properties ; and
I am satisfied that, for medicinal purposes, no finer oil can be procured.
